Open to All

This weekend retreat is offered for new and returning meditators—anyone who wants to explore how we humans might train in opening ourselves to ourselves. This, in order to become truly “Open to All,” and thus be of benefit to the world.

About this Program

Basic human wisdom manifests across cultures.  We all touch upon, and draw from, the essence of many global wisdom traditions.  Shambhala’s secular training in “The Art of Being Human” shows how we can begin to more deeply realize the fundamental goodness of our inherent nature.  Providing a simple yet profound approach, Shambhala vision is expressed in teachings and meditation practices that can help us see the sacred in the everyday, as we discover openness and possibility in ourselves, each other, and our world.

With this weekend, you’re invited to explore how mindfulness-awareness meditation can enrich daily life, even—or especially—during these challenging times.  We’ll sit together for short periods, followed by walking meditation, to foster ease and friendliness with the experience of being present with our own minds.  Interspersed talks and discussions will allow opportunities for you to contemplate, through your own lights, teachings on the cultivation of authentic relationships we can enjoy with ourselves and others.

Through a balance of instruction and practice, stillness and movement, conversation and silence, an onscreen film and the movies of our minds—plus yes, the enjoyment of food and the awaiting of it—our aim is to create an enlightened weekend with a diverse group of people able to be—just be—together.

  • About the Teacher

As a student of the Shambhala Buddhist lineages, and as a Cinematic Arts professor at UNM, in 2006 Dr. Susan Dever expanded a three-decade career in US Latino/Latin American film and literature to begin offering courses in Contemplative Cinema.  Since 2011 she has directed introductory Shambhala Training programs, subsequently teaching Shambhala Art. Our meditation community’s aspiration to create an enlightened society also resonates with her film students. Through the combined practice of sitting meditation and interdependent art-making, they engage cinema that reconnects us with our genuine selves.
